In May, Murcia was the Spanish region with the highest growth in international tourist arrivals and spending.
Tourist numbers hit record high in May
According to the National Statistics Institute’s Fronteur survey, the number of international tourists visiting Murcia reached 103,764, up 50 percent compared to the previous year. Total tourist expenditure amounted to 154.2 million euros, an astonishing 102 percent increase compared to May 2023, and well above the national average of 19.7 percent increase reported in the Egatour survey.

Regional tourism growth outpaces national growth
Of these tourists, 38,018 (36.6%) stayed in regulated accommodation, up 5.6% from May 2023. Additionally, the region had the longest average length of stay for international tourists at 13.72 days, more than double the national average of 6.18 days. Average spending per person during their stay totaled €1,486.29, up 34.8% year-on-year (up 7.3% nationally).
Tourists from overseas flock to this area
From January to May, the region received 382,781 foreign tourists, 20.4 percent more than in 2023, the second highest figure on record and making it the third fastest growing region for foreign tourists. During this period, tourists spent €521.7 million, 45 percent more than in 2023, making the region the third highest contributor to the economy after Cantabria and Castile-La Mancha.
The top visitor origins, including the UK, France, Belgium and the Nordic countries, are expected to contribute significantly to tourism growth in the region in 2024.
