In April alone, Spain welcomed 7.8 million international tourists.
Among the tourists who increased their daily spending the most, traditional British and German holidaymakers stood out, leaving Spanish companies with around 10 euros more per day.
While British and Germans continue to be the most frequent visitors to the Costa Islands, they are followed by Americans, Irish and Belgians.
According to the latest data published this week by the National Statistics Institute (INE), Spain welcomed 7.8 million foreign tourists in April alone, bringing home 9.565 million euros – both figures a record high and 8.3% and 13.1% respectively above the figures for 2023.
With these records, April closed the first quarter of 2024, a quarter in which almost 24 million international visitors came to Spain, up 14.5% year-on-year.
Both the numbers of tourists visiting and the amount they spend confirm the unstoppable growth of the holiday market, no doubt due in large part to the country’s popularity among British tourists, with 4.4 million visiting Spain between January and April.
What’s interesting is that over the past few months, the increase in spending has significantly outpaced the impressive increase in visitor numbers: for example, tourist numbers from the UK and Germany increased by 16.9% and 12.9% respectively compared to last year, yet spending while visiting increased by 23%.
But in both cases, the key point is that Spain has fully recovered the ground it lost during the pandemic, beating its 2019 record.
In the first case, between January and April, tourists from the UK spent an average of 163 euros per day during their visit, 11 euros more than in the first quarter of 2023, with the average length of stay remaining at around one week. For Germans, the average daily expenditure per tourist increased by 9 euros to 154 euros. The average length of stay for Germans is slightly longer than for the British, reaching 8.5 days.
