Holidaymakers travelling across Europe this summer could face major disruption due to a wave of strikes affecting various parts of the transport industry. With many worker groups across the continent exerting their power through strikes, travel disruptions are certainly looming and could affect the plans of many tourists.
Certain strike risks across Europe
UK rail strike: Aslef, the train drivers’ union, has been on strike since July 2022 over pay and working conditions, seeking wage payment without conditions. Talks are ongoing but no clear solution is in sight, with a 90% chance that the strike will continue this summer, potentially leading to the cancellation of thousands of trains. UK easyJet pilot dispute: Pilots who rejected a £200,000 pay deal are represented by the British Airline Pilots Association, but could still cause disruption, though with a low 1% chance. EasyJet has assured that no strike is planned, which could minimise disruption. French air traffic control strike: French air traffic controllers, known for their high impact, have a history of affecting flights to and from France, causing widespread cancellations and delays. The chance of a strike remains high, at 70%. Paris Olympics transport strike: With the Paris Olympics approaching, transport strikes could occur despite new legislation aimed at mitigating disruptions during important events such as the Olympics. The chances of a strike affecting the Olympics are relatively low at 10%.
Continuing concerns in other European countries
Frequent transport strikes in Italy: Strikes are common in Italy, especially in public transport such as urban transport, railways and airports, and the impending rail strike could cause widespread problems. Air and rail strikes in Germany: Although Lufthansa has resolved a dispute with employees, airport and rail workers in Germany may still go on strike, especially given the added pressure of the upcoming Euro 2024 football championship.
Prepare for potential disruptions
Travellers planning travel to or within Europe this summer should be aware of the high probability of disruption due to strikes in a variety of sectors. These strikes highlight the interdependence within the travel industry and how strikes by a small number of workers can have a significant impact on holiday plans. Travellers are advised to stay informed and consider flexible travel arrangements where possible.
