Tourism focus boosts Philippines to record numbers
The Marcos administration’s focus on tourism development has shown remarkable results, with the tourism industry recording its highest-ever growth in 2023. In an achievement report ahead of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s State of the Union address on Monday, the Department of Tourism (DOT) hailed 2023 as a monumental year for the tourism industry, citing “monumental achievements” even as it strives to recover from the effects of the pandemic.
According to the DOT, tourism will account for 8.6 percent of gross domestic product in 2023, reaching at least P2.09 trillion, the highest in the past 24 years, while inbound and domestic tourist receipts will total P3.367 trillion, up 75.3 percent from 2022.
For Tourism Minister Cristina Garcia Frasco, the chief’s “prioritization of the tourism industry has enabled the achievement of record-breaking figures and other notable milestones,” PNA reported. “The president’s leadership and clear vision for tourism excellence in the country have enabled the department to develop and implement innovative programs that have resulted in improved quality of tourism services, expanded tourism opportunities across the country, and improved tourist experiences, longer stays and increased spending,” Frasco said in the report.
