Editor’s note: This is part of a history series about popular tourist activities in Transylvania County. A related exhibit will be on display on the second floor of the Transylvania County Library through July.
When people want to express themselves, they make joyful noises and movements. Traditional mountain music and dance have been a part of the charm of the region since the earliest days of Transylvania County.
As people go through life, they feel emotions and want to express them. Songs are a way to share joy, sorrow and ecstasy. Rhythm makes people want to move to the rhythm.
Many different styles of music are rooted in Transylvania County: old time, bluegrass, country and folk all have their roots in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Classical, jazz and orchestral music are also alive and well at the Brevard Music Center and Brevard College. Local venues feature rock and contemporary music performed by up-and-coming young musicians.
Places like Transylvania Music Camp developed as a way to learn more about traditional music. The camp eventually grew into the Brevard Music Center, which still features things like opera and jazz through its summer series.
Old-time musician jam sessions are a part of any event and are often held periodically in various locations, sometimes accompanied by the clanging of xylophones. Visitors, friends and families love to gather in Brevard to play and sing together and bond over a shared love of music.
