The Republican Party of the Northern Mariana Islands is calling for sound economic policies to revive Tinian’s tourism industry, an effort that has been joined by Rep. Patrick H. San Nicolas (R-Tinian).
San Nicolas announced that he will work with CNMI Republican Representative Diego T. Benavente to advocate for sound economic policies aimed at reviving the CNMI’s tourism industry.
San Nicolas, the incumbent Rep. for the 6th Congressional District, is running for re-election in the 2024 general election under the CNMI Republican Party banner.
“In response to President Benavente’s request, we are committed to implementing sound economic policies that will revive and strengthen our tourism industry,” San Nicolas said.
“Our community relies heavily on tourism and it is important that we have strategies to attract tourists from diverse markets and stimulate economic growth,” he added.
San Nicolas has been a fierce advocate for the needs of his constituents during his two terms in the House of Representatives, emphasizing the importance of revitalizing the tourism industry, which has faced major challenges due to a decline in tourists, particularly from China.
For this reason, San Nicolas recognizes the tourism sector’s vital role in the economic health of the Commonwealth as a whole and supports Benavente’s vision for a strong and thriving tourism sector.
“Tourism is the lifeblood of our economy and a focus on sustainable and innovative policies will ensure the long-term prosperity of our islands,” he said.
San Nicolas said he supports the Federal Port Authority’s request for an exemption from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s China Order, Section 213, in connection with the Northern Mariana Islands Republican Party’s efforts.
“The DOT exemption is crucial to regaining access to the Chinese tourism market, which is a key component of the Northern Mariana Islands’ economy,” he said.
San Nicolas said he also supports the implementation of the Northern Mariana Islands EVS-TAP program, which allows pre-screened travelers from China to visit the Northern Mariana Islands visa-free under certain conditions, to further facilitate the return of Chinese tourists.
Additionally, San Nicolas supports federal efforts to lower the cost of domestic air travel between Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands by creating special domestic transportation exemptions for foreign airlines.
The measure is expected to make travel more affordable and accessible, benefiting residents and tourists alike.
In addition to tourism, San Nicolas is committed to serving the needs of small businesses and struggling residents.
“Fostering a supportive environment for small businesses and providing relief to those who need it most are key components of our economic strategy. Together, we can build a stronger, more resilient commonwealth,” he said.
San Nicolas expressed his enthusiasm to continue serving the 6th Congressional District and working with Benavente and party members to achieve common goals.
“I am impressed with President Benavente’s leadership and vision and look forward to working with him to make a meaningful difference in the lives of my constituents,” he said.
