MAKKAH, June 20 (Bernama) — Multiple countries have confirmed that many of the pilgrims who died during this year’s Hajj season had entered Saudi Arabia on tourist or visit visas months before the start of the Hajj rituals.
Of the 41 Jordanian citizens who died during this year’s Hajj season and were issued burial permits in Mecca, none were part of Jordan’s official Hajj delegation, The Jordan Times reported, citing the Jordanian Foreign Ministry.
The Samer TV report, citing the Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Migration and Tunisians abroad, also confirmed that most of the Tunisian pilgrims who died had entered the Kingdom on a tourist, visit or Umrah visa.
This year’s Hajj season in Mecca saw unusually high temperatures, with many pilgrims of different nationalities arriving on tourist and visiting visas.
These pilgrims travelled long distances to the holy city under the scorching sun without accommodation, food or transport provided by any organisation.
As a result, they suffered from heatstroke, exposure to the sun, and had to walk on rough, unpaved roads that were not designed for pedestrians, leading to many tragic deaths.
