The Southern Delaware Tourism Bureau and the Tourism Academy have partnered to provide tourism ambassador training to Sussex County frontline workers and interested area residents.
This free online training program includes details on why tourism is so important to Sussex County and an overview of the resources Southern Delaware Tourism provides to assist visitors, guests and customers. Topics include: Southern Delaware Tourism: Who We Are, What We Do and Why We Do It, a detailed explanation of the SDT Visitor Guide and fun facts to introduce future tourism ambassadors to lesser known aspects of the Sussex County experience, and information about SDT’s SouthDel Sidekick app, a native app with GPS capabilities that allows you to find tourism information on the fly and create suggestions to share with visitors, guests and customers.
“This program is a great way to update front-line managers, staff and interested area residents early in the season, especially newcomers who may not be familiar with Southern Delaware or the tourism industry,” said Scott Thomas, executive director of the Southern Delaware Tourism Bureau. “Even experienced managers and staff can increase their knowledge of all that Sussex County has to offer and gain more confidence working with visitors, guests and customers.”
Thomas emphasized that the goal of the program is to ensure that all visitors and local businesses who visit the region feel welcome, have all their questions fully answered, receive knowledgeable introductions to activities, restaurants, entertainment, tours and adventures, and are inspired to explore and return to the region.
SDT is looking for businesses interested in offering discounted or free experiences to enable tourism ambassadors to share their authentic, first-hand knowledge of local attractions, places, experiences and activities as they assist visitors.
Businesses that support the program by having their employees take courses or by offering benefits benefit in two ways: They increase repeat business by having knowledgeable, helpful staff provide the best customer service to guests and visitors. Plus, businesses that offer benefits receive referrals from tourism ambassadors based on their personal experiences, which are the most valuable referrals. Business representatives who would like to participate by offering a benefit should contact Southern Delaware Tourism at 302-856-1818 or SouthDel@VisitSouthernDelaware.com.
Frontline managers, employees and interested community members can register for the course at southdeltap.visitsoutherndelaware.com.
