Dusit Thani College hosted a sustainability workshop for Ferrandi Paris students, focusing on sustainable tourism development, under the guidance of Dr Scott Smith.
Bangkok, Thailand – Dusit Thani College (DTC) hosted a week-long sustainability workshop for Ferrandi Paris graduate students currently studying sustainability at the college. Led by Dr. Scott Smith from Assumption University in Thailand, a certified facilitator for the 2030 SDGs Game, the intensive program aimed to provide a deeper understanding of sustainable tourism development, explore ways to increase tourism’s positive impacts while reducing its negative effects, and demonstrate the power of global collaboration and innovative education.
The workshop began with the 2030 SDGs Game, a dynamic simulation in which students create the world they want to see by spending time and money to complete projects. The game highlights the importance of balancing people, planet, and profit.
Through this interactive exercise, students experienced first-hand the potential of collective action to achieve individual and global sustainability goals. Reflecting on the experience, Dr. Scott Smith praised the students, saying, “Every 2030 SDG Game turns out differently. In this game, we saw how a group of like-minded people who know each other well can work together to make a real difference in a short amount of time and create the world they want to see. Their commitment to sustainability and creative solutions is truly inspiring.”
Following the match, the students explored a case study written by Dr Scott and published in the prestigious Hospitality and Tourism Case Study Journal. Titled “Asian Oasis – A Mystical Journey through Hill Tribe Villages in Northern Thailand”, the case study provided valuable insight into sustainable tourism practices in the region.
Throughout the week, students participated in a variety of activities, including lectures, group discussions and practical projects. A highlight of the program was the participation in the 2024 Sustainability for Business Forum (SBF), organized by the French-Thai Chamber of Commerce and other chambers of commerce, which featured a series of inspiring presentations and discussions aimed at supporting businesses with innovative strategies for economic, environmental and social performance.
Student presentations showcase practical sustainability initiatives
The week-long workshop culminated with student presentations where participants shared their learnings and innovative ideas. Chai Ngohie Malavasi and Auguste de Seyssel presented an analysis of the economic, environmental and socio-cultural impacts of an e-scooter ride-sharing system on the Dusit Thani College community. Lillou Julliatt and Agathe Dubus proposed a rooftop garden for the Paris campus, designed to provide fresh produce for Ferran Green, the campus’s plant-based restaurant, a sustainable project by Vincent Detelder and Antoine Matéodore.
As an intern, George closely monitors news trends, helps with content publishing, and delves into social media distribution strategies. He is currently studying Business Administration at the Athens University of Economics.
