Tanzania has been selected to host the second United Nations Tourism (UN Tourism) African Culinary Regional Forum to be held in 2025. The announcement was made by UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili at the inaugural forum held in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.
Pololikashvili commended Tanzania’s Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism, Angela Kairuki, for her efforts to promote indigenous food tourism, who stressed the importance of going beyond traditional safari tourism to showcase Africa’s rich cultural heritage, particularly its gastronomy.
Minister Kairuki highlighted the potential benefits the forum, which involved stakeholders from farmers to food processors, could bring to Tanzania’s tourism value chain. She emphasised it was an opportunity to showcase Tanzania’s heritage and strengthen the tourism sector.
The event will also feature a competition for students and professionals to exchange experiences with their colleagues from other African countries. Tanzania National Tourism University CEO, Dr. Florian Mutei, noted that the forum will have important implications for tourism education in conjunction with the university’s culinary training programme.
Opening the current forum, President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe emphasised the key role of agriculture in food tourism and underlined the importance of the sector across the African continent.
