County lawmakers unanimously agreed Tuesday to create a task force to explore ways to attract more sporting events to Montgomery County and increase the revenue they generate.
“Sports tourism is a huge industry that has a significant economic impact on our local community,” said Economic Development Committee Chair Natali Fani Gonzalez. “The impact is significant in many ways, from job creation, to spending in hotels and restaurants, to developing the next generation of athletes in our community. We are excited to launch this task force and can’t wait to see its recommendations.”
Will Jawando, chairman of the Assembly’s Education and Culture Committee, added, “The Sports Tourism Task Force is an opportunity to expand sports tourism in the county, increase the workforce and attract special events to the county. The task force will play a key role in evaluating and identifying facilities to expand what we have to offer in the county.”
The task force will conduct a facilities needs assessment, specifically looking at a multi-purpose facility that could increase sports capacity and serve as an event venue, and will also identify ways to improve marketing and attract professional sports teams to the area.
The county previously tried to secure a minor league baseball field and team for Rockville, “but unfortunately, that fell through,” said County Councilman Gabe Albornoz.
He pointed to the Bowie Baysox team as an example of what the county can accommodate and “bring the community together.”
The task force is expected to complete a report with recommendations to the County Council no later than June 2025. Members include:
Montgomery County Commissioner of Revenue (Chairperson) Chairman, Maryland State Sports Commission Director, Maryland Soccerplex President and CEO, Montgomery Convention and Visitors Association Deputy Commissioner, Montgomery County Parks Department (or designee) Chair, Montgomery County Sports Advisory Committee Montgomery County Public Schools Systemwide Athletics Director Montgomery County Recreation Director (or designee)
