What is a “tourist trap”?
Many Texans and people from other states drive across or across the Lone Star State, and tourists may want to make stops along the way to tour the sights and sites throughout this vast state.
But which places are actually worth visiting, and which aren’t? Opinions vary on what constitutes a “tourist trap.” My interpretation is that it’s a place that lots of people make a big fuss about, but that isn’t actually worth the time or effort.
Now, if you ask me what the biggest tourist trap in Texas is, my answer is simple…

Indeed, I said yes! “We have to stop at Buc-ee’s” so we can fill up the tank with gas and spend $1000 on Bieber stuff we don’t need. Just kidding. Buc-ee’s will probably replace our ruling class soon. Plus, they’re no longer a “tourist trap” since they’re spread all over the country.

Amarillo’s Big Texan was named the “worst” tourist scam in the Lone Star State by Insider magazine, which rates each state’s “worst tourist scams.”
World-famous for its famous 72-ounce steak challenge, the Big Texan also has a hotel, gift shop and ranch on-site, but it’s still what Insider staff calls “a big Texas cliché.” But we guess that’s the main idea, don’t you?
The Big Texan restaurant is filled with Texas-inspired décor, which can lead to sensory overload. Plus, the food is really bland, with many Yelp reviews noting that the meat is dry and grainy.

Oh my goodness! I pass through Amarillo a lot but have never stopped at the Big Texan, but I definitely want to check it out next time I’m in the area.
