The number of countries and regions eligible for visa exemptions for up to 60 days for tourism and short-term business travel will increase from the current 57 countries and regions to 93 countries and regions.
The Information Department of Thailand announced that the Thai Cabinet has approved new visa and travel measures proposed by the Consular Bureau aimed at boosting Thailand’s economy and promoting tourism.
These measures are divided into three stages.
Short-term measures (effective late June or early July 2024)
Visa exemption extension
Thailand will extend the visa exemption period for tourists and short-term business travelers to up to 60 days from the current maximum of 30 days for passport holders from 93 countries/regions. This is an increase from the current 57 countries/regions. The updated list includes:
Australia Bhutan Brunei Cambodia China Hong Kong India Indonesia Japan Republic of Korea Laos Macau Malaysia Philippines Singapore Sri Lanka Taiwan Vietnam
This will come into effect in June, government spokesman Chai Watchaloke said, according to a Reuters report.
Expanded Visa on Arrival (VOA)
The number of countries or territories covered by the VOA will increase from 19 to 31, covering citizens of the following markets:
Armenia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Bhutan, Bolivia, China, Costa Rica, Cyprus, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Fiji, Georgia, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Malta, Mexico, Namibia, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Seychelles, Taiwan, Uzbekistan, Tunisia, Vanuatu, Venezuela
Introduction of Thai Travel Visa (DTV)
Aimed at long-term travelers, digital nomads and cultural participants, the new visa will allow multiple entries within a five-year period for stays of up to 180 days per visit.
Enhanced Nonimmigrant Visas
Improvements will be made to facilitate travel to Thailand for international students and graduating students.
Establishment of the Visa Policy Committee
A new committee will be established to develop entry procedures and improve the efficiency of the immigration process.
Mid-term measures
Simplifying Non-Immigrant Visas
Nonimmigrant visa types will be grouped and streamlined.
Relaxation of health insurance requirements
Health insurance requirements will be relaxed and the list of countries eligible for long-term nonimmigrant visa applications will be expanded.
Introduction of electronic visa system
The e-visa system is expected to be implemented in all embassies and consulates by December 2024.
Long-term
Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) System
The ETA system will be introduced to complement the e-Visa system.
