In the latest ranking, South Africa is the highest ranked country in Africa, followed by Mauritius and Ghana. Sub-Saharan Africa saw significant improvements in the trade and transport sector, which drives job creation and economic development.
The global travel and tourism (T&T) sector is expected to return to pre-pandemic levels by 2024, driven by the lifting of restrictions and strong demand. However, challenges remain, including uneven regional recoveries, labour shortages and supply-demand imbalances. External factors such as global inflation, conflict and environmental issues are adding further pressure.
The report notes that Sub-Saharan Africa has seen the largest improvement in TTDI performance since 2019 (+2.1%), with 16 of the 19 regional economies included in the index seeing an increase in their TTDI score.
In 2024, Africa had the highest score in the T&T Socio-Economic Impact Score, with T&T industries in Africa generating an average of 21% more jobs per direct position than the TTDI average, and an average of 43% more of the sector’s workforce employed in segments considered relatively high-wage.
South Africa tops the list of the top 10 tourist destinations in Africa, with Mauritius and Botswana coming in second and third respectively. Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Namibia, Zambia, Ghana and Senegal follow in the top 10 list.
