SRINAGAR: Srinagar is hosting a tourism conference to celebrate its status as World Crafts City and is expecting record tourist footfall, backed by participation from the film industry.
Recently, Srinagar hosted a two-day Tourism Development Conference 2024 organised by the Tourism Department which focused on promoting sustainable tourism activities in Jammu and Kashmir. The event brought together industry leaders and film personalities to discuss strategies.
Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha highlighted the central government’s strong funding for sustainable tourism and its efforts to elevate Kashmir’s global tourism profile. He noted the remarkable growth since the pandemic, particularly the 300% increase in foreign tourists over last year, which he attributed to new policies, a favorable environment and stimulus packages.
Domestic tourism in Kashmir this summer is a testament to the success of these efforts, with over 1.25 million tourists arriving in the past six months alone, signaling the possibility of a record-breaking year in 2024. Last year, Kashmir welcomed 21.1 million tourists, who are vital to its economy and livelihoods.
Srinagar has received a major honour when it was designated a World Craft City by the World Crafts Council, a milestone which promises to boost the craft sector and overall infrastructure development. The recognition is expected to provide an immersive experience in the vibrant artisan community and attract more tourists interested in the culture and artisan heritage.
Speaking to the media about Srinagar being declared as the World Crafts City, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said that Srinagar will see an increase in foreign tourists.
“Srinagar’s tourism industry will also benefit greatly from this recognition. The city is expected to attract more tourists interested in its cultural and craft heritage by offering an immersive experience of its vibrant artisan community,” he said.
He further said that Srinagar city’s cultural and craft heritage will attract tourists seeking authentic experiences such as visits to artisan workshops and cultural events showcasing vibrant crafts.
Renowned personalities from the film industry including Imtiaz Ali, Vishal Bhardwaj, Kabir Khan and Sanjay Suri participated in the conference and highlighted Srinagar’s growing attractiveness for sustainable tourism and film production.
