(MENAFN-Bangladesh Monitor) Dhaka: Shahabuddin Ahmad, a native of Barishal and a veteran of the country’s tourism industry, died at the age of 89 due to a heart attack on June 21 at the Holy Family Red Crescent Hospital in the capital.
He is the Publisher/Editor of The Travel World magazine and former Director General of the Planning Office at the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism.
Ahmad was buried in the capital’s Banani Cemetery.
Dua Mehfil will be performed at Masq-ul-Magfilah in Uttara, Dhaka on June 24, after Asar prayers for salvation of his departed soul.
Mr Ahmad is survived by his wife and three daughters. He is the elder brother of Bir Bikram Mahbub Uddin Ahmad, who led the guard of honour for the newly formed independent Bangladesh government in Mujibnagar, and Dr Mohammed Harnoor Rashid, a former secretary to the Bangladesh government.
His career has spanned the tourism and media industries and he has held key positions in a long and illustrious career, including as Additional Director General of the Pakistan Tourism Board, Additional Director General of the Tourism Division in the Pakistan Ministry of Defence and, post-independence, in the Foreign Trade Department of the Bangladesh Ministry of Commerce.
Ahmad has also served as head of public relations at Bangladesh Bank, director of Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation and board secretary at Bangladesh Services Limited.
In 2019, Mr. Ahmad was awarded the PATA Gold Award by the Pacific Asia Travel Association in recognition of his dedication and outstanding achievements in the field. He has also been a member and advisor to the PATA Bangladesh Chapter since 1983.
