Travelers reveal lesser-advertised destinations worth visiting
Don’t get me wrong. There’s a reason places like Paris, Tokyo, and Los Angeles are popular tourist destinations. These places have a lot to offer visitors. But it’s a wonderful big world out there, full of hidden gems and lesser-traveled places. So redditor u/Hot- Vegetable3827 asked, “Which country is a must-visit even though it’s not very popular?” Here’s what people, including members of the BuzzFeed community, are saying.
1. “Hydra, Greece. My wife and I just went on a long honeymoon in Greece. Hydra was one of the islands we absolutely loved, even though it’s not as well known as Santorini or Mykonos. In fact, it was probably our favorite island. There wasn’t much to do or see there, but it was basically a getaway from a busy day of sightseeing in Athens. I needed it before going to a party in Mykonos. There are no cars on the island, only donkeys, and it’s a small island that’s very walkable.”
2. “Laos. I completely fell in love with everything about this country. The people are amazing, the food is amazing, and the scenery is just gorgeous.”
3. “Cartagena, Colombia. My wife and I went last year and are already planning our next visit. Easy and quick trip from the US. Cheap, delicious street food, friendly people. , and a great climate all year round. ”
4. “Slovenia. My wife was born there and we go back every other year to see her family and friends. It’s a very beautiful country, especially with its Instagram-worthy locations like Lake Bled and Predjama Grad. The secret is now starting to come out.”It is certainly not as crowded as similar countries like Croatia. ”
5. “Tunisia, especially Tunis and Monastir. I love it there. It’s very cheap to visit and the people are incredibly friendly.”
6. “Curaçao. We had a great beach vacation there. It was much cheaper than the better-known and more visited Caribbean islands.”
7. “Oman. This Middle Eastern country is home to rugged mountains, desert dunes, historic forts, and magnificent ships.”
8. “Sri Lanka. How beautiful, this country has it all: beaches, forests, mountains, ancient temples, wildlife safaris. I loved the food, including lots of curries. There’s a lot more to choose from, including lots of fresh seafood. ”
9. “Ghent, Belgium is an amazing city. It’s vibrant, historic, and fun. I highly recommend you visit.”
10. “Malta. It’s full of delicious food (kind of a mix of Arabian and Italian influences) and historical places, including ancient ruins. The capital, Valletta, is beautiful, and it’s home to two small islands called Gozo and Gozo. There’s also plenty of public transportation available, so it’s easy to get around without a car.
11. “Belfast is underrated, IMO. I was hoping to revisit Dublin but hotel prices are so high at the moment so I went to Belfast instead. Fantastic We found it to be a very interesting city with food, pubs, music and culture.” It’s close to the countryside so you can do day trips there, and everyone I met in town was interesting and friendly. ”
12. “Lyon. Two hours by train from Paris, but only a fraction of the population. It’s like the Florence of France, with walkability and world-class cuisine.”
13. “Kazakhstan. Wonderful nature and landscapes, unique cuisine, friendly people who are very generous to their guests. There are also some fascinating ruins.”
14. “New Mexico. People who live in America don’t realize how unique and beautiful this landscape is. The drive from Española to Taos is probably one of my favorite things in the world. The food is really… I can’t beat that. Besides, there’s a balloon festival, so that’s enough.”
15. “I really love Guatemala. Even better if you speak some Spanish. Fly out of Guatemala City and make Antigua your base. There’s plenty to see and do in Antigua and the surrounding area. Although you can spend the entire holiday on your own, there are plenty of places to visit on day trips or overnight trips from Antigua.
16. “Bolivia. It has amazing scenery, it’s spotlessly clean, the people are friendly, and there are lots of fun things to do if you want to party. I haven’t been back in 10 years and I still want to go back.” I hope.” It holds a special place in my heart. ”
17. “Jordan. Petra is by far the coolest thing I’ve ever seen with my own eyes. Pictures just don’t do it. You could even fit an elephant through the doors of the Treasury. It’s wild.”
18. “Mongolia. The only big city is Ulaanbaatar, and a day or two is enough. But that countryside! It’s so beautiful. I went to a camp where a ger (Mongolian yurt) was set up.” , just hanging out in the beauty of nature.”
19. “Sapporo, Japan. My husband and I went to this city on Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido and it was amazing. When most people think of traveling to Japan, they think of Tokyo, but… , Sapporo is far less touristy and surrounded by mountains. The city is incredibly beautiful and the food is to die for, with a scenic 1-hour bus ride and the best of glass blowing industries and beautiful canals. We arrive in the well-known old town of Otaru. The people are friendly and helpful. We’ve been to several places on our previous trips, but Sapporo is the best so far. We’re already planning on going again someday. I swore.”
