Visit SLO California’s National Travel and Tourism Week Reaches $2.32 Billion

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, Calif. – The Visit SLO CAL organization announced a staggering $2.32 billion in visitor spending in honor of National Travel and Tourism Week.

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, Calif., May 16, 2024 – Today, in commemoration of National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW), Visit SLO CAL (SLO CAL), the official destination marketing and management organization (DMMO) of San Luis Obispo County, is celebrating National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW). has been announced. Direct tourism travel spending in SLO CAL reached $2.32 billion, showing consistent performance from the previous year.

This is a significant accomplishment for SLO CAL, which is leading the way in visitor spending on the Central Coast. In 2023, SLO CAL’s tourism industry generated a hefty $60.1 million in temporary occupancy tax revenue. SLO CAL’s tourism industry employs 22,830 residents every day, registering a 2% year-over-year (YOY) increase, and includes lodging, food services, arts, entertainment, recreation, ground transportation, wineries, breweries, It includes a variety of areas including distilleries and more.

“As we celebrate National Travel and Tourism Week and California Tourism Month, we are excited to highlight the positive impact of tourism at SLO CAL,” said Kathy Cartier, interim president and CEO of Visit SLO CAL. ” he said.

“Tourism is the second-largest economic driver in SLO CAL after agriculture, driving sales growth and innovation, supporting education, and promoting the operations that power our economies, nations, and communities. It plays a vital role in enabling the success of every industry.”

Tourism also contributed $110 million to local tax revenues in 2023. Without the tax revenue generated by tourism, each local household would need to pay an additional $21,415 to generate the same economic benefit to the community. Additionally, each household would need to spend an additional $1,914 in taxes to generate the same economic impact for local businesses. Cartier continued, “SLO CAL tourism strengthens local businesses, helps protect local communities, and creates thousands of jobs.

We are pleased with the consistent performance of the tourism industry in tourist spending in SLO CAL. ” Other notable indicators achieved in 2023 are:

• SLO CAL tourism generated $207 million in state and local taxes

• Tourism in SLO CAL accounts for 10.66% of the county’s total GDP.

• SLO CAL’s tourism industry revenue (total travel-related after-tax net income, including wage and salary expenses) was $912 million.

This is an increase of 5.9% compared to the previous year. This announcement coincides with his NTTW of the United States Travel Association, which will be celebrated May 19-25, 2024. This annual tradition recognizes the important role travel plays in driving economic growth, fostering vibrant communities, creating quality employment opportunities and inspiring people. New businesses and improved quality of life for Americans.

NTTW aligns with California Tourism Month, a bipartisan May proclamation established in 2016. Through this annual designation, Visit California, a statewide travel organization, relies on tourism partners across the state, such as Visit SLO CAL, to collectively help shape a more efficient, innovative, and sustainable travel industry. It emphasizes the importance of resilience and determination.
