Meanwhile, more affordable aesthetic lodging can also be found in suburbs such as Sparks, Nevada (22nd) and Rancho Cordova, California (54th), and outlying cities such as Las Cruces, New Mexico (36th). Affordable getaways in Texas include relaxing by the lake in Lewisville (#73), taking in views of the Rio Grande in McAllen (#33), and vacationing by the bay in Corpus Christi (#208). Behind the rankings
First, we determined the most relevant factors (indicators) to rank the best vacation cities with spectacular views. We then assigned weights to each factor based on its importance and grouped the factors into three categories: access, quality, and cost. Categories, factors and their weights are listed in the methodology.
We then collected data on each factor from Airbnb and Expedia for each of the 500 largest cities in the United States. We excluded 45 cities that lacked hotels or Airbnb rentals with a view, and therefore quality and cost data, resulting in a final sample size of 455 cities.
Finally, we calculated each city’s score (out of 100) to determine its ranking in each factor, in each category, and overall. A city’s overall score is the average of its scores across all factors and categories. The highest overall score was “highest” (1st place), and the lowest was “worst” (455th place).
