Bali has introduced spot drug testing for tourist drivers at popular tourist spots on the island.

The first random inspection was conducted on Friday, April 19th.

The surprise checks are part of a wider mission to crack down on drug use and tourism service providers who drive or work under the influence of drugs.

Bali’s Gianyar Regency National Narcotics Agency (BNNK) held a spot drug urine testing program on Friday at the parking lot of tourist attraction Bedul village in Goa Gajah.

BNNK said the unannounced tests were “not intended to provide legal protection to those suspected of drug use in urine tests,” but rather to ensure that Gianyar province is a drug-free area. He said there was.

AKBP Yi Gusti Agung Alit Adnyana, Director of Gianyar BNNK, said the operation will not only ensure a smooth and safe Eid holiday period, but also support the Prevention, Eradication, Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking (P4GN) program. He said that it would be done.

“To ensure this, we need to conduct urine tests for early detection on land, sea and air transport crews,” AKBP Adnyana told reporters. . BNNP and he directed BNNK/Municipality to carry out early detection urine testing activities in their respective areas, especially in areas with potential for drug abuse. “

He further added, “This urine testing activity is a form of early detection that is carried out outside the legal process and is free of prejudice. It is done to determine whether a drug is present in a person’s body.

On Friday, 10 tourist drivers were randomly selected for urine drug tests, and all 10 samples came back negative. Police used a seven-point rapid test.

This is all part of an island-wide mission to ensure the tourism sector provides safe, reliable and legally operated taxi and transport services.

In recent months, there has been a small but significant increase in the number of reports of online taxi drivers and tourist taxi drivers being rude and aggressive towards tourists.

These range from extorting huge fares from tourists to predatory behavior.

Online taxi service provider Grab has partnered with the Bali Tourism Board to conduct a series of training workshops for drivers.

While many private tourist taxi drivers have experience in the hospitality industry, many Grab and GoJek drivers take the job for money and carry a wide range of passengers. For many, working as a Grab driver is their first time working directly with tourists.

After the first training workshop for Grab drivers held in March, Bali Tourism Board Director Chok Bagus Pemayun told reporters that the hospitality training will improve the public image of Bali’s taxi drivers. He said it will help protect the safety and security of both drivers and tourists. I’m enjoying life on the island.

“Grab is actually the vanguard of providing an image of Bali tourism that is culture-based, quality, sustainable and dignified,” Pemayun told reporters.

He explained how drivers must develop a “tourism-aware mindset” and play their role as tourism service providers seriously and professionally.

The training sessions included sessions entitled “The Role of Drivers in the Tourism Industry,” “Ethical Standards for Tourism Services,” and “Training to Prevent Sexual Violence.”

Although neither Gianyar BNKK nor Bali BNN have announced any further surprise drug testing, tourists visiting Bali are reminded that Indonesia has one of the strictest anti-drug policies in the world. ing. A zero-tolerance policy against drugs is in place throughout Indonesia.

Although marijuana has been legalized in Thailand and tourists can easily purchase THC and CBD products over the counter, these should never be purchased in Indonesia and should not be purchased before heading to the airport to travel to Indonesia. It is necessary to use it up or dispose of it properly in Thailand. Even if it’s just for transit.
