Mexico will be the most visited destination in Latin America by foreign tourists in 2022, with more than 38 million tourist arrivals in the same year. The Dominican Republic came in second place, although it was far behind.
A global tourism powerhouse
By developing airport infrastructure and coordinating new direct flights, Mexico is putting international tourism high on its priority list. At the forefront of Mexico’s international tourism surge is FONATUR (Mexican National Tourism Development Fund). The tourism organization worked to expand Cancun’s airport and four other major tourist airports in the country. Additionally, Mexico City’s airport added new international direct flights in his 2010s, and as a result was rated as the most internationally connected airport in Latin America in 2019. Due to these and other developments in this field, the North American country managed to enter the top 20. It was selected as a destination in the travel and tourism competitiveness ranking of the year.
South America tourism leader
Argentina has grown its international tourism sector through its geographically diverse landscape and globally recognized wine industry. The influx of foreign tourists to Argentina can, in part, be attributed to the country’s air travel infrastructure. Air Argentina, the national airline, was one of the top airlines operating in Latin America in 2019. In the same year, the number of passengers to Argentine airports increased by 4%. However, with the outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic in April 2020, international air travel arrivals to Argentina came to a complete halt, and the global tourism industry suffered a similar fate.
