Mammoth Cave National Park officials plan to celebrate National Park Week and several other commemorative events.

Like many parks across the country, Mammoth Cave will be hosting multiple events on Saturday, April 20th. In honor of National Volunteer Week and Earth Day, a volunteer cleanup will be held from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., where guests can help clean up trash and debris. Tourists can join his free self-guided Discovery Tour from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All events take place in Central Daylight Time.

Molly Schroer is a spokesperson for Mammoth Cave National Park. She said the park is known as the world’s largest cave system, but she believes officials also want to focus on above-ground attractions.

“The great thing about our park is that we also have activities on the water, on the sunny side of the park. There are 42 miles of paddling river,” Schroer said. “So there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the park other than going inside the cave.”

Visitors will also have the opportunity to participate in free guided wildflower hikes, birding events, exhibits and more during Wildflower Day celebrations on Saturday, April 20th. All activities at Wildflower are free and no reservations are required.

By the end of the day, Schroer said he hopes families and visitors will have a deeper understanding of what the national park has to offer.

“We have 429 national park units across the country. These are places that are extremely important to us as humans and as Americans. They represent our landscape, our history, and our country. We are there to protect a culture that truly reflects the diversity of our shared heritage,” Schroer said.

In honor of National Parks Week, all admission fees to national parks will be waived on Saturday. Schroer said Mammoth Cave will always be free to enter, but will also offer free tours.

Registration for volunteer cleanup events and a complete list of special events are available online at the Mammoth Cave National Park website.
