Elizabeth Sanchez and her family live in Rappahannock County but have been visiting the Waynesboro area frequently over the past few months.

The Sanchez family was among the participants in Waynesboro’s third annual Tour the Town event. Sponsored by Destination Downtown Waynesboro and the Waynesboro Economic Development and Tourism Bureau, the event offered $40 tickets good for merchandise, discounts and other perks at 22 participating businesses downtown, making it a worthwhile investment for attendees.

“I’d like to get to know the town better,” said Sanchez, who said she has eaten at restaurants downtown on previous trips. Her family may eventually move to the area, she said.

Stephanie Duffy, economic development and tourism project manager, said 53 tickets for Tour the Town were sold ahead of the event thanks to online promotion. Within the first two hours of Wednesday’s event, visitors from as far away as Boston stopped by the event tent.

Duffy said increased participation from downtown merchants has also helped.

“They’re excited to be involved,” she said.

Megan Swanson, president of Destination Downtown Waynesboro and marketing and social media coordinator for the Economic Development and Tourism Department, said “Tour the Town” is a unique event taking place in downtown Waynesboro in the spring, coinciding with the Wayne Theatre’s first-ever Wayne on Main outdoor concert.

Swanson said the event is expanding “not just to restaurants, but to museums, galleries and shops.”

Wednesday night’s Wayne on Main concert featured Davis and Jack Reed, grandsons of famous locals The Statler Brothers.
