UN tourism member countries and territories advance Europe’s agenda as they lead global recovery

Europe’s national tourism authorities met to promote common solutions to the biggest challenges facing the tourism industry and the opportunities presented by its return after the pandemic.

The 70th session of the United Nations Tourism Committee for Europe brought together 40 high-level representatives in the Albanian capital. The conference, attended by almost all UN Tourism Member States in the region, served as a platform for dialogue and cooperation, a venue to exchange knowledge, share best practices and address the challenges and opportunities facing the tourism sector. provided.

Albania leads Europe’s tourism recovery

Prior to the meeting, UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili met with Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama to discuss common priorities and future cooperation. The Secretary-General praised Albania’s leadership in the post-pandemic tourism recovery. The country became one of the top performing destinations in 2023, with a 53% increase in the number of international tourist arrivals registered in 2019.

The Secretary-General and the Prime Minister also discussed the importance of sustainable tourism development and opportunities to further strengthen Albania’s tourism sector. They exchanged views on key strategies to promote responsible tourism practices, leverage digital innovation, and further contribute to economic growth through tourism education. They emphasized the value of fostering a resilient and inclusive tourism industry that benefits local communities and preserves cultural heritage.

The aim of the conference was to foster an in-depth discussion on the specific challenges facing the tourism sector in South East Europe. Representatives from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia and Slovenia shared ideas, insights and opinions, with a particular focus on short-term rentals and regional investments.

Tomorrow, the traditional side conference on “Tourism Investment and Economic Development in Europe” will be held. The event will present the guidelines developed by the United Nations Tourism Organization: “Doing Business in Tourism: Investing in Albania”. Speakers, experts and other participants at the event will discuss global tourism investment trends and opportunities, identify pathways for positive change and accelerating tourism investment for the benefit of all, and We will share success stories and future prospects for tourism investment in Albania.
